Initial Situation
The existing GitLab landscape comprises several tens of thousands of repositories. Dependencies (libraries, container images, build tools) are currently updated manually or inconsistently. This results in outdated components, unpatched security vulnerabilities, and a high level of manual effort for the development teams.
Project Objective
Development and rollout of a centrally operated, automated dependency management solution based on Renovate, which scales to several tens of thousands of GitLab repositories and reliably delivers updates as merge requests.
Project Scope
• Architecture & Design: Design of a scalable operating model (self-hosted Renovate, distributed workers/runners, job scheduling, caching, rate-limit handling towards the GitLab API and external registries).
• Automated Onboarding: Discovery and integration of repositories without manual effort per project.
• Configuration Management: Central, versioned preset configurations (shared config) with defined update strategies, groupings, time windows, and auto-merge rules; extensible by teams at repository level.
• Security & Compliance: Secure management of credentials and registry access, least-privilege access, prioritization of security-relevant updates (CVE-driven updates).
• Operations & Observability: Monitoring, logging, dashboards, and key metrics on update throughput, error rates, and repository coverage.
• Rollout & Enablement: Phased introduction (pilot ? waves ? full coverage), documentation, guidelines, and training of the development teams.
Platform / DevOps Engineer (2 persons)
Role in the Project
Implements the solution technically, automates operations and onboarding, and ensures stable regular operation across tens of thousands of repositories.
Responsibilities
• Implementation and deployment of the self-hosted Renovate environment (containers, workers, job orchestration)
• Automated repository discovery and onboarding via the GitLab API
• Implementation of the central configuration presets and repository-specific extension mechanisms
• Setup of monitoring, logging, alerting, and reporting dashboards (coverage, throughput, error rates)
• Performance tuning: parallelization, caching, rate-limit and error handling
• Integration of artifact registries and secure credential stores
• Operational documentation, runbooks, and support for the development teams during the rollout
Other Skills:
Required Profile
• Solid experience as a DevOps, platform, or automation engineer
• Very good knowledge of GitLab CI/CD and the GitLab API
• Practical experience with containers and Kubernetes as well as Infrastructure as Code (e.g. OpenTofu, Helm)
• Good scripting/programming skills (e.g. Bash, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript)
• Experience with monitoring and observability stacks (New Relic)
• Knowledge of secrets management (e.g. Vault) and package/container registries
• Renovate experience
• Independent, structured way of working and an automation-oriented mindset
• English speaking
